Do You Understand the Words?

St. Barnabas Anglican Church - Neh. 8:1-12; Ps. 113; 1 Cor. 12:12-27; Luke 4:14-21

Fr. Boersma recently gave a sermon at St. Barnabas Anglican Church in Keller, TX, on The Third Sunday of Epiphany. The homily centers on our reception of Scripture and how true understanding is found in following Christ’s understanding of himself.

God has manifested to us his heart. He is a God who wants his people to rejoice, not weep because their New Year's Day must be a day of celebration.

He is a God who wants the poor and needy to share in the fat of the cattle and the sweetness of the wine. He is a God who gives the body's unpresentable parts a place along with the honorable parts.

He is a God who proclaims release to the captives and gives sight to the blind.

He is a God, as our Psalm for today, Psalm 113, puts it, who takes up the lowly out of the dust and lifts the poor out of the ashes.

Do you understand the gospel?

It is epiphany.

God shows himself to you in Jesus. He shows his very heart to you. When your heart softens so as to become like Jesus, it is then that you too have true understanding.
