Joshua as Sacrament: Spiritual Interpretation in Origen

In this essay, I will focus on Origen's homilies on Joshua, and I hope to show from these homilies (as well as from additional reflections on Origen's theology) that, even though he does downplay the historical character of some of the events related to us in the book of Joshua, Origen nonetheless values the historical level in a penultimate sense as a result of the sacramental cast of his exegesis. We can only appreciate how Origen's exegesis functions if and when we come to understand the sacramental structure that lies at the basis of his interpretation.
